Dear School Library Media Specialist – You are invited to attend January school librarian events in the virtual reality environment "Second Life" brought to you by the Chicago Public Schools Department of Libraries & Information Services. All events will be at 9pm EST/ 8pm CST/ 7pm MST/ 6pm PST for one hour. - *Monday, January 14* – *Librarian Orientation to Second Life – *Learn the basics of moving, communicating, and navigating in Second Life. Instant message Elaine Tulip or Corinne Fleury for a teleport to this event. - *Tuesday, January 15* - *Maintaining Intellectual Freedom in a Filtered World,* *Speaker: Doug Johnson* This session will summarize the concepts of intellectual freedom as they have traditionally applied to schools and libraries, suggest ways that these values should be extended to online resources, and conclude a strategy for using Internet filters appropriately. See systems requirements at http://secondlife.com/corporate/sysreqs.php 3. Log into SL using the downloaded client view with your avatar name and password. 4. Participate in the orientation activities to learn basics of SL. 5. On the evening of the event, log on at least 15 minutes early.
