I have a 3rd grade teacher who is looking for a read-aloud. She just finished The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, and she wants something as "powerful" as that one. Despereaux and Winn-Dixie are on our Battle of the Books lists, so she doesn't want to read them. She loves Where the Red Fern Grows, but is not sure her kids can deal with the death of the dogs - they are a very sensitive class. She definitely does not want Beverly Cleary (she mentioned her by name), nor can the theme revolve around death or loss (I suggested Petey, but she said know when she found out he dies). Any ideas?
