Subject: Cataloging

I am a brand new media specialist this year and the middle school
library I work in catalogues and processes MARC records using the cutter
system. I have a question involving nonfiction works. If we were sent a
mythology/folk tale book authored by the last name of Smith, our book
jobber would send us a sheet cataloging that book as
398 SMI. Currently, we would not use the "SMI". Does anyone have advice
for a middle school library that is transitioning from one system to
another? Thank you for your help.

Yet another plea for help. Jodi G., the teachers here love the Month is
info and I love working with it. Now though, the 6th grade has decided
to celebrate Cowboy Poetry Day! I love it, however, we have a poor
poetry collection, so folks can you help me rustle up some doggie verse.

Thanks!

As always you have been generous with your time and comments. All
contributions are availabe at my blog, http://drmabell.blogspot.com/

Here are some summary remarks. If you have not commented and would like
to do so, I would still love to hear from you!

I had a lot of fun learning what other people term must-haves in the
following categories:

   - Hardware/gadget
   - Application/software
   - Web 2.0 service/application

I also learned some things. One of the most striking things I noticed
was that many people who responded via email after I posted to listservs
remarked that they were not using Web 2.0 resources, or not much.
Because they are such a big part of my present work and experience, it
this was something of a surprise though that should not have been the
case. Far too many K-12 educators have no access at work due to
Draconian filtering parameters. Also, many folks are hard pressed to
find time to experiment with new things because of heavy schedules, lack
of support such as library aides, and mountains of paperwork. Those who
did say they had dipped into social networking, mostly mentioned blogs
that they followed and in some cases that they were writing.

Another interesting thing was the range of gadgets that were mentioned.
I had everything from TV to the George Foreman grill named as favorite
device!
The two mentioned most often were the cell phone and flash drives. It
was interesting how many people really must have the little drives, and
helped me remember how important they were to me in the past. Now I
store most things online and thus use them less.

Regarding applications, several librarians mentioned their library
automation, causing me to remember how essential this was in my previous
life as a junior high librarian.

Again, thanks and best wishes, mabell

Hello Wise Ones,

A teacher is looking for an adult fiction book that was mentioned in a
class she took and has now lost the notes for. It is about an man who
was abused as a child and the vignettes revolve around his re-inventing
himself as he matures (if I followed her description properly). She
thinks it had the name "Sam" in the title. Any clues anyone?

Thanks.

Subject: re Share: New Way to Swap Books Bookcrossing

I've been a very active member of bookcrossing for several years now. =
The point of it is really not a book swap, but more releasing books into
= the wild. I have left books for others to find in Milwaukee, WI that
= have made their way to New Zealand, Iraq, Sweden, Canada, and England
as = well as travelling all over the US. The originators were sitting
around = one day thinking about what they could do to make the world a
better = place. The idea came from the Where's George website, only
here you = register the book on the website, label it, and then leave it
for = someone to find. One of the taglines is "Turning the entire world
into = a library".This is world wide and has forums where you can talk
to = people from all over the world. One of my favorite quotes from =
bookcrossing is:
=20
"If a 20 something gay Pagan/Wiccan and a 50 year old straight Baptist =
can be friends, there is hope for all the world, don't you think?" - =
Texaswren to N8an, 12/03

I also have an Official BookCrossing Zone (OBCZ) set up in our school =
library. The kids all know that if a book has a little running book on
=
the spine, it is a travelling book that they are free to take with them.

If anyone would like some more information on this, I would be happy

Here's a link to the list - The committee finishes meeting a whole day
after the other awards are announced, because they have to go through so
many nominations (216 this year) and write annotations for the
80-85 chosen.

Anyway here's the link:
