[LM_NET] Ref, Gen: Looking for a favorite childhood book

This request comes from someone who is 28 years old and remembers the book from his 
childhood.  This is what he remembers:

about the length of Curious Georgewatercolor or maybe colored chalk 
illustrationsabout a detective helping someone find somethingthe detective flies or 
glides away on an umbrella at one pointin one part, a character opens a door to a 
dark room and everything's black in the picture except the light from the doorway 
and white eyes in the darkness
there are large ships involved somehowAny leads would be appreciated.  Thanks.
