It's the end of the day and I just finished with two very difficult first grades, so maybe my tolerance is low, but I just have to get something off my chest to those who will understand what I'm feeling. Every year I ask to be a part of the Read Across America Day planning. Every year planning is done without any input from me. It appears that all the planning for this is done mainly by the reading teacher. I didn't realize that the planning for this had already been done for this year until I received a copy of the flyer to go home to parents about this. I always asked to be a part of this since I happen to be the librarian; maybe I might have some input about how to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday (she said sarcastically). I'm really feeling like what I have to offer is totally dismissed - that is until somebody wants a book so they can do a lesson in 5 minutes or they are having a bad day and need a video to show so they don't have to teach at the end of the day. Some of the teachers are looking to purchase magazines for their classrooms (this came from a suggestion by the reading teacher approximately 2 months ago), so I offered to make suggestions of magazines that might be appropriate for classroom use and lent them my EBSCO catalogue. No one got back to me until yesterday when a teacher asked me to make suggestions as I was picking her class up for Media. I have no clue as to where the catalogue is at this point. I'm guess I'm just feeling like I really don't matter in the grand scheme of things and that scares me. Working in a private school during difficult economic times isn't always the most secure place to be. And, after reading all the posts from people in public school systems who a losing their jobs because administrators think they can do without a professional in the position, I really feel insecure. Thanks for listening. Anne E. Howard, M.A., M.S.
