Thanks to everyone who responded. I tried a couple of ask the expert sites, but
this sounds definitive here:

Wow,. That is truly one question that I have never been asked before!
To the best of my knowledge, there is no specific title for someone who specializes
in just felines or even just carnivores. I think the closest you might get is a
"mammalogist" for the study of mammals.

Most people who study big cats are called Feline Specialists, or carnivore
specialists, or even big cat specialists.

One of the reasons for this is probably the limited subject area because felines,
or even carnivores, as a group are a small percentage of the living population.
Mammalogists study mammals in general (like a herpetologist studies reptiles), but
I think that is as specific as you will find.

the Primates are the exception to this, but that is primarily because the close
similarities to humans. Many primatologists study primate behavior and relate the
same to humans, and vice versa. The genetic difference between a chimp and a human
is less than 5 %, so the area of study for them is huge on many levels.

Hope that helps a little. If you Do come across a name for this type of
specialist, please let me know!

Trivia Question for you (and your student)... If a group of birds is called a
flock, and a group of fish a school, and a group of whales a pod etc..
What do you call a group of Tigers? .... A group of tigers is called a "Streak"

Thanks for your note!
