Position Vacancy - Children's Librarian- Teacher/Librarian Prek-8th grade

The Children's Librarian at Bank Street College is a full time position. The 
Children's Librarian is responsible for all school library functions and 
activities. These activities include, but are not limited to, collection 
management, library instruction to classes in the School for Children, management 
of the circulation of children's materials, and the provision of reference 
assistance to all members of the Bank Street College community as well as others 
outside of the college.

 

Responsibilities

Administering and overseeing circulation of children's materials. 
Selecting and purchasing children's materials, in a variety of media, to support 
the curriculum needs of the SFC. 
Overseeing the cataloging and classification of children's materials. 
Culling and weeding the children's collection as necessary. 
Supervising the re-shelving of children's materials and overseeing the general 
appearance of the collection. 
Supporting the research and pleasure reading needs of children in the SFC, with 
particular attention to promoting information literacy. 
Participating in SFC staff and section meetings. 
Coordinating/collaborating with teachers in the SFC on curriculum development. 
Providing reference assistance to all patrons. 
Assisting students in selection of materials and advising teachers about new and 
existing materials and techniques. 
Working cooperatively with all school/library administrative and support staff. 
Compiling bibliographies on a variety of topics. 
Participating in college-wide activities. 
Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
 

Qualifications

MLIS from ALA accredited program 
Knowledge of teaching and learning theories, psychology of learning and 
development, instructional development, curriculum development, learning needs of 
special populations, and knowledge of current children's literature. 
Teaching experience in pre-K - 8 environments 
Comfortable with children as well as adults. 
Ability to work cooperatively with staff to plan, develop, and implement a high 
level of student services and programs. 
Willingness to collaborate with others on the Library team. 
Ability to communicate and express ideas effectively in both written and oral 
forms. 
Comfortable with technology and able to integrate its use into the library program.

Position is a 1-year sabbatical replacement and begins August 18, 2008.
Salary dependent on experience.
