Thank you to all who responded. I got some good information to share. Ann ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Take a look at these sites. Some are from university libraries, yes, but you can still use it depending of your students reading level * A One size fits all type of site: http://www.lesley.edu/library/guides/research/evaluating_web.html * The Good, The Bad & The Ugly or, Why It's a Good Idea to Evaluate Web Sources: http://lib.nmsu.edu/instruction/evalcrit.html * Kathy Schrock's Guide: http://school.discoveryeducation.com/schrockguide/eval.html < http://school.discoveryeducation.com/schrockguide/eval.html> (elementary and middle) * QUICK: http://www.quick.org.uk/menu.htm (elementary) * Great tutoring site with great articulation between ideas: * http://liblearn.osu.edu/tutor/les1/http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/TeachingLib/Guides/Internet/Evaluate.html * http://www.library.cornell.edu/olinuris/ref/research/webeval.html * http://www.library.cornell.edu/olinuris/ref/webcrit.html ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Take a look at something new that has been developed by some professors, Doug O'Connor and Carl Heine from the Illinois Math and Science Acadamey and is called Informational Fluency http://21cif.imsa.edu/ Here is the module on evaluation http://21cif.imsa.edu/rkit/newRkit/evaluation.html The curriculum is great and the lessons so well thought out. I have been using them with my 6th graders to teach searching. There are lessons, games etc. The section on evaluating web sites is on the site also. There is also a ning off of Joyce Valenza's page. Here is the ning, you might be interested in seeing what others are doing. http://teacherlibrarian.ning.com/group/informationfluency ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I just did a presentation to staff yesterday on this same topic. I have a series of links on my school library website that might be useful. You can find it at: http://fc.msad47.org/~lmcmahon/Teacherinfopg-3.htm Hope these links are helpful. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Kathy Schrock's Educator's guide has a whole page of great links on this subject at http://school.discoveryeducation.com/schrockguide/yp/iypabout.html ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You can try www.easywhois.com .... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This is a link to Kathy Schrock's page, this is the section on web site evaluation. I have used it often and find the 5Ws are simple and easy for students to remember. There are some handouts that can be made into signs for your library or a classroom. http://kathyschrock.net/abceval/ http://kathyschrock.net/abceval/5ws.htm ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Try this site from Berkley: http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/TeachingLib/Guides/Internet/Evaluate.html . Then, try this one from Cornell University: http://www.library.cornell.edu/olinuris/ref/research/webeval.html and Cornell's five criteria for evaluating web pages: http://www.library.cornell.edu/olinuris/ref/webcrit.html Or check out the links that follow: http://lib.nmsu.edu/instruction/evalcrit.html http://www.lesley.edu/library/guides/research/evaluating_web.html from Kathy Schrock: http://school.discoveryeducation.com/schrockguide/eval.html Here are eight ways of checking information on web sites. http://www.quick.org.uk/menu.htm From OSU: http://liblearn.osu.edu/tutor/les1/ Check all of them if you have time; there are many more sources if you simply google "evaluating web sites." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Thanks again!
