I keep a suggestion box stocked with scrap paper slips and pencil stubs on a
shelf in our library. Anytime someone asks for something we don't have (even
teachers), I ask them to write it on a slip and drop it in the box. (If they
want to know if we buy it, I ask them to sign it, too.) From time to time, I
empty the box and make a list of stuff to look for or order. And if someone
asks for something we won't buy or can't offer, I tell the person so and
suggest an alternative title or suggest looking for it at the public library
or local bookstore. Works well and makes the kids feel like I care about
their tastes.
