Here are the responses I've received. I'm still not ready to implement this (or even know if I want to). Still thinking it over... Thanks for the replies. It let me know what issues would be involved if I ever decided to do this. There were also some good alternatives, like sending email. I already do this, but get very little response. Thanks so much for all the replies! ----- I have Athena and I can put a parent's email address in the patron information and email overdue and fine notices. I don't have everyone's email address but I get a good response from the ones that it sends. The only problem I've encountered is that I have to click OKAY for each message before it is sent because I get a message that says something to the effect that another program is trying to send an email message, do I want to allow it? This pops up for each email being sent. I think it would be more work than it is worth. Also, I'm one of those who has text messaging disabled on my phone. The "feature" is part of my plan, but I told the service that I don't want it at all. That way I don't have to may for spam text messages, and since I don't send them, I'm not out anything. I just started doing this! I've only had one kid sign up so far but I hope to get more on board. I use Google to send the messages and I have the kids (and their parents) sign a form saying they agree to be responsible for any charges incurred - as my kids tell me if if ask someone "Do you text" it implies do you have unlimited texting service. Clever idea, but judging by what's going on right now with Detroit's mayor and his text messaging I think that it would be against privacy rules. Personally, I would like to have them all wear beanies that would light up when they have a book that is overdue. <grin> Good luck. Very interesting post! Because of the fees often associated with txt messages, I would suggest using emails or IMs. I do wonder if Twitter would work, although I wonder if Twitter is something students use. Have you asked students for suggestions? It would be interesting to hear what they say. Most kids have e-mail, and e-mail does not cost per message the way text messages do. Perhaps that would be a better route. I use Alexandria and it has an email feature to send out overdues. I can preview the overdue list prior to sending it all out via email to each student but I love it. That way we aren't chasing down students or putting all the overdue notices on their locker like a badge of honor. It's a great system because I can also keep a list of the students that were sent notices and if the girl denies she received the notice, the tech department can verify I sent it. Granted I am working in a 1:1 computing environment, but I love it, love it, love it. It's such a huge time saver. I should also tell you I'm in a private Catholic school. Good luck with your information search. Yep, some of my teachers are better than others. We have about 200 items over due UNLESS it is report card time and then the "NO FINES" rule kicks in and we get almost everything back. At the end of the year, we usually end up with 10 to 15 who do not clear. The H.S. librarian is tenacious! She charges daily fines, assigns detention AND if the kids do not clear their fines by graduation they do not walk! So, I just do not worry about it. Now, if I were the HS person; I would probably do all of the above EXCEPT the daily fines. Although the program we use can do that, I just wouldn't worry about it. Best of luck. Might try some of those sneaky incentive things. Everybody returning overdues gets into a drawing. Free book, free coffee something the students would want.
