I received some wonderful ideas for Black History Month. Thank you everyone.
Several librarians said that inventories have been know to kill creativity. Here
is the orginal post.

What are you doing for Black History Month? We are putting up a Black Authors
display in the library and a tribute
(http://library.lhs.usd497.org/2008%20Black%20American%20Month.html) is going up on
the library web page. I feel
everything is dull and not very imaginative. I want a display that will create
excitement and a thirst for information.
Where is my creativity? Maybe it is because we are doing inventory to get ready to
update our Follett system. If you
have suggestions that will add some "zip" to the celebration that is fast and easy,
please send it my way. February 1 is
Friday.

Now, here is the good part...The ideas!!!!!!

I'm doing a display that focuses on LOCAL black history. Some of the teachers at
my school are long term residents and we are displaying items like the yearbook
from the black high school, quilts, photos of first school for black children in
the county and things like that.

I ordered a book called Black History Month Resource Book from Gale (078761775X)
and found a great idea which I am going to try- have the students make bookmarks
with African- American quotes, they write it on, decorate (I have a lot of stamps
and pads, plus a basket of art supplies) and then laminate them.?? I'll try it
during lunch, we are open and some students like to do art instead of reading..I
have been googling to print out lists of good quotes.? I have had good results with
lunch literary-art activities for Christmas.
____

I had an idea but haven't put it together yet. I thought about doing a
MovieMaker slide show tribute to African Americans who died within the last
year or two. I'd have music in the background by Wilson Picket or James
Brown maybe. James Brown, Coretta Scott King, Ed Bradley, Wilson Picket and
soldiers who died in the Iraq War are just a sampling of people I might use.

I am doing "Love Your Library" display, pink, red, black! I love it!

You can see our calendar of activities for February at
www.youseemore.com/unionparish. What is exciting me most about the month
is that in addition to books and one dimensional photos, etc, we have a lot
of 3-D items such as actual instruments, school desks, diplomas, masks,
antiques, etc---we collected anything that represents the four pillars of
Black History month: Foundation, Frontiers, Faith, and Family. We even
have a life size horse with a Buffalo Soldier on top.

Also, another idea is African Folktales. There are a couple of powerpoints
out there that talk about African folktales in song and dance.

____
We are trying something different for Black History Month. We are focusing on the
Harlem Renaissance, and in conjunction with that, are sponsoring several
activities. We have described what we have planned on our blog, Lucy and Ethel in
the library. To see the details, check the posting Visit the Harlem Renaissance @
Your Library about 1/2 way down the blog, or click the heading Activities in the
right hand column. http://lucyandethelinthelibrary.blogspot.com/

We'll blog later about the success of our activities.

____

A few years ago for Black History Month we pulled biographies of a variety of
people, printed pictures of them, and then wrote short summaries of what the person
was famous for/accomplished. A bulletin board had the pictures and names and a
sheet of paper had the summaries. We had a matching game where kids could use the
books to match the person to the accomplishment. Then we randomly choose some
winners from students who completed the sheet properly.
