Shift by Charlotte Agell. Holt, 2008. ISBN: 978-0805078107 (Available 9-1-08)

For fifteen-year-old Adrian Havoc, the dystopic present is an
enormous frustration. Living in the United Christian States of
America as he does, where the HomeState holds all power over both
society and the individual citizen, it is rather difficult to find
one's true self. With telejector images of the Rapture required
viewing in every home, his best friend Daniel and his Jewish family
removed by HomeState Security, and his dad missing after his stint on
the moon, Adrian nevertheless refuses to comply, refuses to
acknowledge defeat and await the threatened Apocalypse with his
clairvoyant younger sister, Shriek, and his HomeState employed
mother. Agell deftly creates a future world so believable that when
these dire circumstances compel Adrian to accompany a sexy young zoo
worker on a secret mission away from the Citylands, through the
nuclear devastated Deadlands of Massachusetts, and into the
uninhabited wasteland of Maine, the reader willingly follows them
into a small enclave of insurgents set on changing the course of
history. Believable characters and a compelling plot, with just
enough future science to intrigue without weighing down the action,
Shift will appeal to middle school and teen readers looking for
science fiction with humor and heart. [Suggested Grades: 6-10]
