Thanks to all who responded! Here was the original post: Fellow LM_Netters, I need projects for 2 - 5 grades to help them understand the election process and make candidate choices. I've found great websites to explain all that, I just need projects to help them make the information their own. I'm thinking about having the 4th and 5th graders researching the candidates and then composing campaign speeches for the morning TV news show. I'm drawing a blank on what to do with the 2nd and 3rd graders. Any ideas? I'll post responses. Thanks........... Here are the responses: We did a very simple mock voting in our school. I think the older grades could do what you suggested. The first year of voting, we were running behind so we picked a very simple question that all could vote on. Who do you think should be first in line when lining up? Girls or Boys As simple as this was, K-5 voted. The registration to vote was a must, if you were not registered you could not vote. To register, they had a set time, they had to sign their name on a class list. K used first name all others had to write full name. It was interesting as like in the real world, not registered you can't vote. Teachers would remind them and than let them do it on their own, except for the younger grades K & 1 teachers helped them. Day of voting? well some did not vote, others were sure the boys would win so why bother? more boys than girls in our school. They voted on regular ballots , in secret and no copying others. The girls won!! When discussed in class it was shown those that didn't register could not vote as we had a check list just like in regular voting. And they thought there would be enough votes without their vote... so it was a good lesson. Hope this helps... _______________________________________________________________________________ >http://www.cyberbee.com/election/election.html _______________________________________________________________________________ > Printable Maps : Presidential Elections 1789 - 2000 > > [ http://nationalatlas.gov/printable/elections.html ]http://nationalatlas.gov/printable/elections.html > > > > Maps of "electoral votes won, by political party, for the fifty-four > > Presidential elections from George Washington in 1789 to George W. How about an election of a favorite book? Each student could make a nomination, with reasons to vote, and then students can campaign for their books. I plan on using this approach for my students in grades 2 - 5. We were also able to borrow 3 temporary voting booths from the county election office, so our students will be able to go into the "voting booth" to actually mark their choice for Best Book. Hmmm, perhaps I should have some qualifications for book consideration --- just like US presidents must be a certain age and be US citizens, etc. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I have had my students, middle school, us a United States map and color blue/red for the appropriate candidate which of the states they win in the electoral college the night and next day. Usually the paper will help them if they can't stay up late enough to get the results the night of the election. ________________________________________________________________________________ How about surveying class, student body and graphing results?
