Each year a committee of the Association for Library Service to Children
(ALSC) identifies the best of the best in children's books to designate
"Notable Children's Books".

According to the Notables Criteria, "notable" is defined as: Worthy of
note or notice, important, distinguished, outstanding. As applied to
children's books, notable should be thought to include books of
especially commendable quality, books that exhibit venturesome
creativity, and books of fiction, information, poetry and pictures for
all age levels (birth through age 14) that reflect and encourage
children's interests in exemplary ways.

The list is broken into four categories: younger readers (which might be
what you're looking for, Carol), middle readers, older readers and all
ages. Please take a look:

Subject: ELEM: Best Picture Books of the last year

Good morning all:
Forgive me if this is an issue that has been brought up recently
and I just can't find it in the archives.
I am a missionary in the Philippines who is currently in the
United States just for the month. I have been "planting" myself in the
library trying to find new books to order to take back with me and
realized that I really don't know which new picture books are out there
that are must buys. I can look at various lists on the Internet and look
through the shelves, but then I wonder which ones are REALLY popular
within your elementary library?
If anyone has some truly spectacular picture books that have been
published within the last 2 years or so that you would like to recommend
could you please let me know?

Thanks for you help!
