More books available free in exchange for writing a review-- this set is aimed at the K-8 level. Remember if interested in reviewing, please send me your choice AND snail-mail address. The deal: the books are available free if you will write a review for Knowledge Quest, the Journal of the American Association of School Librarians. To make the deal sweeter, I list the value per word written -- based on the assumption that you will write at least 1000 words. More details about review writing once you accept the assignment. Here are three books to spur the process Building Literacy in Social Studies: Strategies for Improving Comprehension and Critical Thinking By Ron Klemp, Bill McBride, Donna Ogle. (ASCD book, 2007) 210 pages, $30.95.Teaching Young Children Social Studies Skills by Gayle Mindes. Published by Praeger (division of Greenwood Press) in 2006. The 216 page book sells for $49.95. Social Studies Teaching Activities Books: An Annotated Resource Guide by Gary A. Lare. Published in 2006 by The Scarecrow Press, Inc., the 208 page book includes means to locate and access many curriculum materials (simulations, lesson plans, visuals, etc.) is priced at $30.The batch total of $ 110.90 total is $.11 per word. You might want to combine this review with reference to use of primary sources such as the American Memory of the Library of Congress http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/index.html and the use of local resources and local research such as that done by the 5th grade class in Kentucky. Here are two to help. Making Sense of Phonics: The Hows and Whys by Isabel L. Beck. The 134 page 2005 book from Guilford Publications costs $19 and teams well with the activities found in the 2007 Linworth Learning publication, ABC, Follow Me!: Phonics Rhymes and Crafts Grades K-1 by Linda Armstrong. $24.95, 138 pages.The batch total of $43.95 equals $.04 per word. Batch #3: More interested in Theater, Podcasting or other active learning approaches? Then try this group of 4. The first book combines biography with readers theatre. The scripts acquaint students with sports figures (Kurt Angel, Lance Armstrong, Oksana Baiul, Tedy Bruschi, David Eckstein, etc.); singers and actors (Halle Berry, Andrea Bocelli, Tom Cruise, Michael J. Fox, Christopher Reeve); news personalities (FDR, Bob Woodruff, Carolyn McCarthy). Against All Odds: Readers Theatre for Grades 3-8 by Suzanne I. Barchers and Michael Ruscoe, published by Teacher Ideas Press in 2008 as part of the Readers Theatre Series sells for $30. The scripts found in the 252 pages are heavy on the use of narrators but provide a different approach to biography and learning how people overcome adversity (various disabilities).Readers Theatre for Middle School Boys" Investigating the Strange and Mysterious by Ann N. Black is a 2008 publication in the Readers Theatre Series from TIP. 191 pages, $30. Active Learning through Drama, Podcasting, and Puppetry by Kristin Fontichiaro, also from Teacher Ideas Press is packed with ideas for active learning. The 223 page book published in 2007 costs $35..Add children's literature and music with Exploring the Connection Between Children's Literature and Music by Regina Carlow. The book includes a glossary, bibliography of music and of books the sing/play and other useful aids. Libraries Unlimited published this 124 page book in 2007 at $30.Batch total = $125 or $.13 per word. You don't need to review all four in detail; an overview of 1 or 2 with a more developed focus on some could work well. Batch #4: Is discipline, emotional development, character development, or bullying your bailiwick? Try all or some of this group of five books. Bullying and Harrassment: A Legal Guide for Educators by Kathleen Conn published by ASCD in 2004 sets the legal framework for the issues. 218 pages at $28.95Instructional Practices for Students with Behavioral Disorders: Strategies for Reading, Writing, and Math by J. Ron Nelson, Gregory J. Benner, and Paul Mooney, published by Guilford Publications in 2008 moves the focus to the students. $25, 189 pages.Why Can't You Behave!: The Teacher's Guide to Creative Classroom Management, K-3 by Paula Rogovin provides help to the teacher or librarian with creative suggestions to deal with sassing, whining, teasing, and shouting out and other misbehaviors. Published by Heinemann in 2004, the $19.50 book with 176 pages is a fast tool for learning new techniques that will work for librarians as well as other teachers.Want to add literature to help? Bringing Out their Best: Values Education and Character Development through Traditional Tales by Norma J. Livo includes tales from around th! e world that work for the themes such as love, appreciation, compassion, cooperation, self-discipline, respect, dealing with bullies. $32, 267 pages, published by Libraries Unlimited in 2003 (but since it uses traditional tales still very applicable).Emotion Commotion: Children's Poems and Activities That Explore Emotions written by Kathy Dietz had full page illustrations by Deirdre Friebely with each poem. The spiral bound books allows children to view the image while the teacher/librarian reads the poem on the opposite page. Lots of suggestions for activities and discussions accompany each poem. 38 paged spiral book from Linworth Books, published in 2007 at $39.95.Batch total of $145.40 = $.15 per word.
