Please excuse cross-posting; please forward. ~~~~ Minneapolis Community and Technical College is offering INFS 2210 Introduction to Indexing and Abstracting, a 3-credit course, as part of its Fall 2008 Information Studies department course offerings. The course is one of the courses in MCTC's Library Information Technology A.S. degree and certificate programs, but it can be taken by anyone with permission of the instructor. This course can be taken for college credit or can be audited. The course meets completely online for 16 weeks beginning on Monday, August 25, 2008. Registration for non-degree seeking students is open now. This course provides an introduction to indexing and abstracting theory and practice. Concepts of metadata, language control, quality, and searching implications are emphasized. The course addresses back-of-the-book as well as information object indexing, including traditional print resources as well as online and web-based material. Students are introduced to professional and ethical standards for indexing and abstracting, emphasizing user access to information and how systems impact information retrieval. Readings from the course text (Lancaster's Indexing and Abstracting in Theory and Practice, 3rd edition), and from other sources, including selections from Mulvany's Indexing Books, 2nd edition, introduce concepts that are reinforced through indexing and abstracting exercises. We look at current and future trends and practices, including indexing software, embedded indexing, and online indexing. A final project lets the student focus on an individual area of interest. This course is a good fit for: * MCTC Library Information Technology Program students who want to learn the concepts of information and knowledge management and organization in a broader context than a library cataloging course provides * Librarians and library workers who have never taken an indexing and abstracting course, or who would like some brush-up * Indexers who would like a more formal training option to compliment their on-the-job skill development * Technical and free-lance writers, editors, researchers, and interested others who want to know more about how databases work and how language choices impact information retrieval as well as tools that can improve their own products * Software developers who want to know more about how end-users seek information, how database structure and language control impacts retrieval, and how to apply these skills to build more user-friendly applications For more information on this course, please contact Virginia Heinrich, Minneapolis Community and Technical College Librarian/Instructor, at virginia.heinrich@minneapolis.edu or 612.659.6296.
