Dear Colleagues, I've just learned that Loren Lang added an Indian girl in buckskin to his illustration of Piper's LITTLE ENGINE THAT COULD. Unfortuntely, the book is checked out at our local library. Online, I was able to see a few of the pages on Lang's site, but I'd like to know... Did Lang replace the little girl with ringlets, wearing a bonnet with the Indian girl in buckskin? Or the girl with brown hair, wearing a big yellow bow? I wonder why Lang added the Indian girl? This is a train full of toys... There was no Indian doll in the original edition/illustrations... I wonder why he added this? I wonder if it is meant to be multicultural, like an Indian Barbie doll, or maybe Kaya? I wonder if he has a daughter? If anyone can pull their copy of the Lang illustrated edition and write to me, I'd appreciate it! My email is debreese@illinois.edu.
