Bettering: A Synthesis Primer
By Jamie McKenzie

The AASL Standards for the 21st-Century Learner
call for learners to use skills, resources and tools
to draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply
knowledge to new situations, and create new knowledge
(among other things).

Create new knowledge = Synthesize

Even though synthesis figures prominently in the
curriculum statements of nearly every state,
province and nation, it is difficult to find teachers who
were afforded the opportunity to learn synthesis
(explicitly) as part of their undergraduate or
graduate experience.

In this article, Jamie outlines what amounts to an
introductory course in synthesis and argues that it
should become a major focus for professional development
in all schools since synthesis provides the basis for
invention, originality and the bettering of just
about any aspect of life.
