I just posted a similar TARGET yesterday. I was looking for ideas to get more integrated into the classrooms because of my situation (new library will be ready mid October and all of my books are packed and stored somewhere in the district). I've decided to do computer lab classes with 3rd/4th grade and some with 2nd on our databases and teaching our newly updated library search software (we upgraded to Destiny over the summer). I've gotten some ideas and will probably get the HIT together tomorrow. Watch for it! The plan was that they would gut and rebuild the library over the summer and get everything moved back in. Well, that didn't happen. The gutting part is done and all of my books are saran wrapped into the shelves and I cannot access them. I will be starting the year in classrooms with no access to my books or videos. I will be hitting the public library for books but mostly I need suggestions for grades K-5. Most of my first of the year lessons were based on library orientation or books that I can't get to, and some of them are not at the public library so I need new ideas. And of course we start in a week and a half. So if you have been in this situation or just have some brilliant ideas I welcome them! I shouldn't complain in light of those who have survived floods, but somehow this summer, in the newly built library facility, where the shelves didn't arrive until June so I've spent the summer emptying boxes and making a beautiful library, the air conditioning and de-humidifier conked out (or was turned off ). The maintenance people say they have "solved the problem" (it is cooler) but the books are warping, curling and the pages are rippling like they're sitting on damp towels. The posters are sogging off the walls and the bookmarks have all gone limp. And I hope they get rid of the damp carpet smell before kids come back. It's 100% different from when they left, I don't want their first impression to be mildew. I suggested to the Maintenance person that what was appropriate for a classroom might be different for a carpeted library with wooden bookshelves and 30 laptop computers. He only deals in code numbers and percentages and other arcane dials and levels. My principal asked me to find the pertinent information so, of course, I am turning to you. Is there information about the best level of humidity for a library? It's not archival stuff, but the kids seem to like it. I would appreciate all the help I can get. Thanks very much!! "Fakebook" is a term defined by the Urban Dictionary as "Adding friends to Facebook who you don't particularly like, socialize with or think you are friends with." 2. Beyond Mere Gathering: Turning Social Networking into Collaboration and Synergy http://www.listcast.com/rd?http://fno.org/sum08/synergy.html (fno.org/sum08/synergy.html) By Jamie McKenzie Proponents of Web 2.0 and social networking often make claims for the benefits of this popular (supposedly new) phenomenon that include the likelihood of collaboration and group problem-solving as students from around the world team to take on important challenges. While collaboration might result if the activities are structured in ways that produce those results, decades of school and corporate efforts suggest that quality is unlikely to result from throwing folks together in groups while leaving issues of process to happenstance. This article outlines ways to increase the productivity of groups, whether they be face-to-face or remotely connected through Web 2.0.
