Ok, I am still recovering from what was a really unbelievable moring. Today is our
"Field day" when 8th graders go to a nearby park to swim and play for the day with
a cook out and lots of fun and our 7th graders have a day of activities here at
school.

Over the past several weeks I have been giving my principal a list of the students
who owe books and the cost of replacing those books. He decided that students who
did not return or pay for their books would not be allowed to participate in the
activities today (and we have been telling them this for weeks). Most of our
students thought that this was an idle threat.

BUT THEY WERE WRONG!

This morning he got on the PA system and called the name of every student who owed
a book. The students were assembled in the cafeteria and each one was questioned
as to the whereabouts of their books. Some magically found them, some called
parents or relatives to bring them in, some came up with the money to pay for them
and some will be "working" off the cost of their books. All students were held
accountable and in some way arranged to clear their debts. If they said that
they'd have the books or money in by tomorrow, he told them to call their parents
and let him speak to them- this works for so many things!

All of these students will now be allowed to attend Field Day.

Let me just add- we are not a wealthy school and there were close to 100 students
on the list. But thanks to my principal making it a school-wide issue and not "the
librarian wants her books back", I wasn't the bad guy and I wasn't the lone voice
in this effort.

What a refreshing way to end the year!
