Here are the replies I've received regarding Darren Shan's Demonata series in the middle school: We do have them, and the kids who like the Cirque du Freak books eat them up! I have had no parent complaints about them so far, and this is our 2nd year to have them. It's not my cup of tea, but the kids who like the creepy, horror type stuff like them Yes, we do. I have only read the first one--pretty graphic. I think 8th graders would have no problem, and perhaps sophisticated7th graders. Read Lord Loss and decide for yourself. Yes. I know thus is a very "edgy" decision to make. I was torn betweenmy better judgment which was that they belonged in high school not themiddle school and my desire to keep my eighth grade boys reading. Idecided to keep my eighth grade boys reading. I can't keep them on theshelf. I haven't read them but I decided they were too dark for us. Please post a hit if you receive replies. Cirque du Freak is very popular in my school, too. Yes, I have that series. It is very popular, especially with the boys. My library serves 7-12, and I have both of Shan's series in the collection. They stay in circulation - and not only with middle school boys, either. The girls and a lot of my senior high kids love those books. I looked at them and decided no for my 7-12 library. Seniors who haveread them (personal collection) say they are very graphic and much moreintense that Cirque du Freak. I asked that very question earlier this year and the concensus was that it is very bloody and violent and HS people did not reccommend it for MS. The HS my guys feed into have the series so I told them to look forward to checking them out in HS. They were ok with that. The Cirque du Freak series is very popular here as well. I haveordered the Demon titles for a few other students who seem just asenthralled. It sounds like a justifiable purchase. I have them in my YA collection. I have one girl who is a freshman, wholoves to read vampire stuff, but she read one Demonata and says it's toodark for her.... Yes, added them this year. They too are well received by boys. I have not personally read any, but they got good reviews and were on all the lists to entice boys to read more. No parental concerns as of this time. Yes I have the Demonata series in my library for grades 6 and up. I am not a horror fan so I cannot give you any reviews. I have had a few boys interested. One boy in particular requested them. I don't find they are moving that much. they have it in the middle school i did my internship in. my son is in 5th grade and loves those books. i let him read all of the cirque du freak and demonata series. they are a little gory but i think it's fine!
