Beth (and others interested in the Kindle),

While this is an incredible idea, and a great way to use a technology tool
to find a way to do something that would otherwise be impossible, you can't
do it. Well, that isn't exactly right. You CAN do it, it would just be a
total violation of Amazon's terms of service for the Kindle. As I noted in
my Library Journal review of the Kindle [
http://www.libraryjournal.com/article/CA6514919.html ] sharing is not
allowed.

Other library blogs have discussed this:
http://rochellejustrochelle.typepad.com/copilot/2008/01/loaning-kindle.htmlis
one of the most complete in talking about the restrictions in the
Amazon
terms of use that prevent sharing. Basically, according to the license, it
is probably illegal to share the Kindle with your spouse, much less library
patrons.

So sadly, great idea...but just not compliant with the terms of service at
this point.

The NY Times is fully available for free access online. Perhaps a small
Internet tablet like a Nokia N800 ($300) as a way to have more
dedicated/mobile access for students if you have Wi-Fi?

Sorry to bring the bad news, but I would hate to see libraries get the smack
down from Amazon over this.
