I have been a member of LM_Net for about 6 years and think you all are amazing and inspiring! Thank you for all the great ideas you have given me. In fact, it is because of this list that I went to college and will be earning my BA in June. I have been working as a Library Clerk for the past 12 years in an elementary school which really means I run the library (since there is no Librarian/Media Specialist) but don't do any teaching or any of the great things I read about here on LM_Net. I posted here back in 2002 to find out what types of degrees you all had, how you started out in your jobs and if you had or were required to have teaching credentials for your positions. I received so much encouragement, advice, and wonderful stories that I credit you all with my finally earning my BA at the tender age of 49. However, I really need to get a fulltime position with benefits and retirement so I will begin substitute teaching this fall while I work on getting my teaching credential since that is the quickest way to start earning more money. My dream job would be in a school library, doing the types of things you all do. But since California does not mandate that schools have credentialed Library Media Specialists I don't know if that is a wise or feasible goal for me. No districts in my area even employ a district librarian much less librarians in their schools; all the positions are clerks/technicians. I love my job, I love my library, I love my school. What I don't love is working 184 days a year for 3.95 per day, with a workload of a fulltime position. Plus I can't teach lessons or do any of the other great things you all do because that is not my job nor do I have the time. Even so, I can hardly believe that I will be quitting my job in July. So I guess I am here to first say thanks for the encouragement back in 2002.and "I did it!". But I would also like to hear from those in CA about whether or not there are jobs out there for an LMS. I can't see me moving to another state, I am a California kind of gal. I can't tell you enough how fabulous I think this list is!!!!!
