I just finished reading the comments by Richard Long, director of
government relations for the IRA, in the SLJ extra helpings. Has anyone
sent this man a copy of the research studies an the efficacy of school
libraries and having certified LMS in schools. I think for the library
legislation day someone from AASL should visit these folks at the IRA and
politely suggest that working in conjuction with school libraries might
have made their program a success. Think how much stronger the Reading
first program would have been if they had funneled some of the money into
hiring LMS to partner with reading teachers.

Our school is using literacy collaborative and the success had not been
what they expected. They spent thousands of dollars on building classroom
libraries and training teachers how to set up books by genre, do booktalks
and generate excitement for reading. With that money they could have
hired an k-5 LMS (I am k-12 with library aides teaching library lessons)
and pruchased 3 copies of every book.

If we can find out who to contact I think this would be a good time to
promote the research being done.
