Last week I had asked for input regarding what we were told in our district about "more stringent" Homeland Security measures concerning refrigerators and microwaves in places other than teachers' lounges and the nurse's office. I appreciate your feedback, and it only reenforced my thoughts on the subject. I received over 150 replies. Overwhelmingly, you stated that you had not heard of such stringent measures concerning Homeland Security (110). Approximately one-tenth of you stated that changes were made to save on energy costs; also, less than one-tenth stated that changes were made because of fire-code rules; less than one-tenth stated that your districts had changed policies but not because of Homeland Security (no reason was stated in your email). I believe our "new" policy was a retaliation against a member of our faculty who had fallen out of favor with the admininstration. Some of you added humorous remarks which made my day. Our K-12 Library is a stand-alone building with no close access to a fridge or microwave. Our cafeteria, hs building, and elementary building are several hundred yards on either side of us. Our sidewalks are covered, but in rain, wind, and cold weather, the covered sidewalks are no protection. I was recently diagnosed with diabetes and have had to change my eating habits, thus I believe my fridge and microwave was necessary to this end.. If energy costs or fire codes had been given as reasons for removal, I could have been a somewhat happier camper; but I do hate to be told less than the truth. Thanks for allowing me to vent. Please do not respond to this message. I have no intentions of getting a discussion going about this. I just needed to know if this was a real issue with Homeland Security, and you have responded so wonderfully. I appreciate each of you, and I appreciate this listserv. Have a wonderful Monday morning.
