I'm in the process of creating a list of interesting summer reads to
share with my faculty. I hope we can continue to come up with some
remarkable titles to suggest. Please keep sharing the titles you like
or recommend. Thanks.
Sandy

Here are some titles I would like to recommend as especially good:
A Thousand Splendid Suns - Khaled Hosseini (as good as The Kite
Runner) - moving story about women and the abuse they suffer at the
hands of men in Afghanistan
The Pact - Jodi Picoult (I like her other books too; my favorite: My
Sister's Keeper) - boy accused of murder in a possible suicide pact
Midwives & The Double Bind - both by Chris Bohjalian - midwife
charged with murder when a woman dies giving birth; girl investigates
amazing photos taken by a homeless man who died and uncovers secrets
about a tragic incident in her past
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan & Peony in Love - Lisa See - explore
the bonds between women in China and how they are treated according
to Chinese customs
Thirteenth Tale - Diane Setterfield - a famous author finally opens
up about her real life story - something she has lied about over and
over
Water for Elephants - Sara Gruen - wonderful story about a
90-something year old man looking back on the years he worked as a
vet for a circus and the relationships he forged with the performers
Zookeepers Wife - Diane Ackerman - Holocaust survival story about a
zookeeper's family who sheltered Jews during the war
Glass Castle - Jeannette Wall - survival in a dysfunctional family
Long Way Gone - Ishmael Beah - a boy solder from Africa tells his story
Three Cups of Tea - Greg Mortenson & David Oliver Relin - one man can
make a difference and has by building schools in the remote mountains
of the Himalayas
Zoya's Story - John Follain & Rita Cristofari - a young woman
survives being beaten down by the Taliban and Afghan society
Hemingway Book Club of Kosovo - Paula Huntley - story about a woman
who spends a year trying to teach English to young people in Kosovo
where attitudes about learning are inspiring

Titles I want to read very soon:
Skeletons at the Feast - Chris Bohjalian - two journeys: German
refugees flee the advancing Russian army and Jewish refugees march
from the concentration camp
Pillars of the Earth - Ken Follett - historical tale of suspense
about the building of a cathedral
People of the Book - Geraldine Brooks - follows the existence of the
Sarajevo Haggadah book back to the 1400's as it passes from one time
period to the next
City of Thieves - David Benioff - Russian story of survival
Last Lecture - Randy Pausch - philosophy of a man facing an early death
Veil of Roses - Laura Fitzgerald - a woman flees the oppression of
Iraq for America
