Meg, you raise a very good point. When I took my certification test (MI) I thought
it was the most ridiculous test that I had ever encountered. I would hate to have a
test like that be the only indicator that someone is able to be an effective school
librarian. Fortunately, here that is not the case as my course prep was
extensive.Marsha Redd

Education is not a goal; it is a life-long process. Everyone is a student. Everyone
is a teacher.> Date: Fri, 31 Oct 2008 14:56:19 -0700> From: caughey195@YAHOO.COM>

courses on teaching others about the value of the media center, and courses that
encourage media specialists to promote themselves, I am reminded that another
listserv has been having heated discussion about the fact that, in Pennsylvania at
least, a certified teacher can take the Library Praxis and become a Certified
School Librarian in a morning. Our main argument is that they are coming to
librarianship without the depth of understanding of the actual vision and purpose
of a Library Media Center that trained and dedicated Librarians are mastering
through their own education. I hope that as Departments of Education are
encouraged to value the Media Center more it is because of the knowledge and skills
of the trained librarian, not the score on a Praxis test.> > Meg Hawkins MLS>
