We seem to have a flap developing between one of my language arts teachers and the principal concerning a book from the teacher's classroom collection. The student's mom read the book and objects to its content. No formal challenge has been filed at this point, but the teacher is asking for my support concerning his collection. We are a seventh and eighth grade junior high. I'm going to talk with the teacher tomorrow, but I'm fairly certain he's never read the district's selection policy. If he has, he certainly ignores much of it. He has developed his collection largely from titles bought by the bag at garage sales and discards from various public libraries in the area. He just looks for titles he thinks his students might like. My biggest complaint about classroom collections has always been that they tend to get old and gather dust. But I've heard that some schools don't even allow them. Is this true? I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts.
