Wonderful, helpful group,

This is my first year in this school district.? My predecessor did not buy much
"YA" lit.? I'm not sure why, but from what everyone has told me, she was
ultra-conservative and that reflected in her buying.? And this is a rural
community, but close to large city.

My first week here, I was asked to get Ellen Hopkins' "Crank" and "Glass."? I did
with some concern from my principal ordered the books.? (He did ask me not order
one book?from my order list, and being new and not wanting to make waves, I did not
order it.)?? The books are very popular, and haven't been on my shelves longer than
an hour since I got them.

The principal came to me today?and let?me know he had a call from a parent about
both books.? He asked for the books and I just happened to have a copy of Crank
waiting for the student.? As he was flipping through it, he voiced a couple of his
concerns.? One was that the use of the "F" word in the book was "promotion" of the
word.? Another concern was does the drug use come off in a negative light.

Now, the principal has Crank and a copy of the request for reconsideration for the
parent to fill out.? Does anyone have any suggestions on what else I can do?? I
plan on looking at Chris Cutcher's censorship material, and also emailing Ellen
Hopkins to see if she can give me some insight to the books other than what is on
her site.? I have printed out reviews, too.?
