Two more suggestions in addition to the wonderful list of books below.
The September issue of Book Links featured "Interviews with the Vampire
(Authors)," following up on a November 2007 article "Beyond Buffy:
Vampire Books to Die for." And don't forget about Booklist Online, which
offers great read-alike support that's sortable by age level or grade
range--perfect for when a reader is looking for that next book after the
blockbuster.

Subject: Federated searching vs. the actual databases

An interesting discussion came up at a meeting the other day -- and I
was interested in hearing a variety of view points.

Federated searching does not give the results of searching the actual
database itself.

Is this good or bad?
The average patron (whether a student or teacher) wants results fast and
quick.

Is it more important to have them see a variety of results quickly?
As opposed to having them search a variety of databases that may or may
not have the same search interface?

How much time does a teacher or student have to search a multitude of
databases?

Are there enough media specialists that can actually sit down with every
teacher and student to help them find what they are looking for? (And I
don't mean that as a criticism -- I mean if there are 50 kids in the
media center looking for info -- you just can't get to every single one
and ask them exactly what they want and then steer them to the correct
database.

Are we creating too much confusion for our users by providing multiple
databases that they have to go to and search each one?
or are we better off using a federated search engine that may not give
as in depth results?

Should we be pushing the vendors to make federated search products more
robust?

Let's face it -- most of our patrons go straight to Google - why it is
easy --

and gives them a bunch of results ---
are they good results? maybe - maybe not

so are we better off to get them to use a federated search engine --
that at least gives them access to good databases that you know are good
information? or try to force them to learn all of the various databases
we have -- to be sure we give them the "best" results

I am intersted in hearing what others think.

Thanks
Paula

Subject: TARGET: Voluntary Voting

While I do not want to introduce politics to this list, I do have some
questions that some students have asked me, as we get as much coverage
of the US election as we do our own (it's on live on a national TV
station all day tomorrow our time).

In Australia it is compulsory to vote - or at least get your name
crossed off the electoral roll at a polling booth. A certain % will
always vote informal, and a certain % will not vote and possibly be
fined, but on the whole we get who we vote for. Compulsory voting is a
hot topic around election time here and we were discussing it

What the students want to know is
- the approximate % of US citizens who vote even though they don't have
to

- whether younger people (under 30) are more likely to make the effort
than others

- what is the age for voting in the US federal election (18 or 21) and
is that the same for all states. Some seem to think that some states
are 18 and others are 21.

- why can a person only be president for two terms, and, does knowing
that they are going, mean the last few months of an administration are
all but meaningless because they can either say and do nothing, or say
and do anything knowing it won't necessarily be acted upon?

-do you think it would be better to have unlimited tenure until the
people decide they have had enough?

I know our two systems of electing our leaders are very different and
with the combination of our own federal, state and local elections in
the last year we are all but over politics, but I said I would find
their answers to the questions and then after tomorrow, they can
concentrate on Christmas!

Please respond offlist.

Subject: Target: $5000 wish list

I was told today by my superintendent to put together a $5000 or so wish
list of books I want. We just did a major weeding operation and the
empty shelves are doing their job of showing people how few books we
really have! Hooray! I've told him my first goal of re-stock is the high
school/middle school fiction section, since that's been the most
neglected of all over the years. I have some YA fiction, but very little
that is of any interest to my 9-12 grade kids. I have the Twilight
series and most classics, but otherwise we're bare. What would you put
on that list? $5000 is hardly enough to stock an entire section, but
it's enough to get a head start. What do you suggest?
Thanks!

I have seen several notes asking for info on visiting authors, so I
thought= I'd let everyone know we just had a fabulous visit with Roland
Smith, who = is the author of Peak and Elephant Run (both recently on
our Lone Star read= ing list) as well as Cryptid Hunters and other books
(his newest if the fir= st in a series called IQ.)

His books are aimed at middle school audiences -- action/adventure often
wi= th a theme of animals or nature. his books are well liked by girls
and wel= l as boys, and several have special appeal to reluctant
readers. Along wit= h what I consider the most necessary basics: on
time, professional, friendl= y, adaptable, willing to autograph books,
he was also high energy, tuned in= to what the kids wanted, patient
with questions, and just all around terri=
fic. I always feel nervous about author visits because if something
goes =
