Good afternoon: I have been thinking about this for a while but before I do much more research, I thought I would throw it out to the LM-Netters. This year for the Battle of the Books, we are adding one person per team who will be a "specialist". I had heard about a similar type program in Europe and decided that I would give it a shot here. Basically what it is is one person on each team that rather than reading all of the books, does some reading of short stories from different genres and answers questions on that instead. These people will either be reading the stories the day of the competition or perhaps a few days before but they have been put into this category because they are ESL readers who are struggling to keep up with their classmates, but really want to be a part of the competition. I am also encouraging them to read at least some of the books that the others are reading so that they will be able to really help out their team. My problem now is trying to find short stories (preferably 3-5 pages) across several different genres. My books are made up for mysteries, science fiction, animal books, biographies, korean, poetry, and something fun. I would love to come up with stories also that fit into each of these categories. So far the only one I have thought of is "All summer in a Day" for my Sci-Fi selection. Thanks in advance for any help with this.
