My original query was about asking for good descriptors for web extensions. I was asked to post a hit: Years ago, those top domains actually meant something. Today, though, the only two that are strictly reserved are .gov and .mil. The .org used to mean a nonprofit organization, but today it can also be taken by a for-profit outfit. Colleges and universities are the main users of .edu, but again, that can be taken by anyone. Businesses usually use .com, but some are also using the new one, .biz. A couple of years ago there was a movement to have a new top domain, triple x, to be used by purveyors of "interesting pictures." The idea was that parents could then block that top domain, but since there was no requirement that those companies use that top domain exclusively, they could still use their .com, which wouldn't have accomplished much. http://www.learnthenet.com http://computer.howstuffworks.com/question77.htm -- Elizabeth Ullrich Teacher Librarian Cavallini Middle School Upper Saddle River, NJ eullrich@usrschoolsk8.com 201-961-6400 ext.3041 ³The saddest part of a book is when itıs over² -Unknown -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
