Have you tried librarything.com? I know of a church around here that uses
it for their library, and I have used it to catalog my own books here at
home!
It's free for up to 250 books (?something like that) and then a very small
fee ($25-35??) for a "lifetime" membership, which lets you catalog as many
books as you want. I don't know how many books you are talking about in
this church library, but I have over 1600 books in my own personal
collection, and have had no problems with a collection that size.
There is a search capacity, of course, but all sorts of other features as
well. They seem to keep adding new ones!
Hope this helps.

Subject: GEN: Library catalogs

Good Morning Everyone,

I have a question and I am hoping that I can get some help here. I was
asked by one of the teachers at my school if I knew of any databases that
would be good to use in a church library. Her mother runs the library at
her church and they want to start actually cataloging their collection of
books. However, she said the collection is small to medium and so she
wanted to know if there were any low cost catalog databases out there that
would be a good fit for this type of library. I can only think of the main
ones like Follet, Destiny, Alexandria, etc. But, I know there must be
others that are a bit lower maintenance.

If anyone knows of any and can suggest some to me, I would be so grateful.
I always know this is the best place to come for these types of questions.
You guys are the best!

Thanks for all the help in advance.

What a day! This poor, humiliated, reluctant 6th gr. reader wanted that book
so badly. I had briefly book talked it to him... I would stake my life on it
being realistic fiction... What are your thoughts on it?... I said it was,
our reading specialist said it was, several book lists said it was...The
teacher felt because there were exaggerations in it, the book was more of a
tall tale and wouldn't let him take it out. He started crying in front of
his whole class.. and they can be tough... I told him I would talk to her
but it was to no avail...
Please set me straight.... This is a boy who doesn't really like reading...
yet was very intrigued by this book... I was speechless...

Hello LM Netters, I am currently a student getting my masters in School
Library Media. I have recently attended a conference session on Fixed vs.
Flexed scheduling and I am interested to hear what you all have to say about

the issue. I realize that most high school libraries operate on a flex
schedule but I am interested to see what the primary/elementary and
intermediate librarians feel about the scheduling situation. Even though
the speakers at the session were strongly in favor of a purely flex
schedule, I still found that many elementary librarians that I talked to
felt that a mixed (fixed and flex) schedule worked best for their students.

Thank you for all responses,

Subject: TARGET-> Book Fair Experiment

Hello LM_NET Members,

The moderators of our listserve approved my posting this message.

This weekend (Friday-Sunday November 21-23) our library media center is
hosting a book fair at our local Barnes and Noble Booksellers. The book fair

operates this way: the book fair is the store! Almost any item that is
purchased in the store during this weekend ( including cafe items, music,
DVDs, etc.) may be credited toward our bookfair when a customer identifies
herself or himself as supporting our school book fair--- before the purchase

is concluded at checkout. However, Barnes and Noble is conducting an
experiment and we are participating. When a patron of any Barnes and Noble
store in the chain shops this weekend, she or he may support our book fair
by presenting the attached voucher at purchase. The clerk will then key in
the ID number that appears on the voucher. In fact, the out of town shoppers

must present the voucher if the purchase is to be credited toward the book
fair. There is no additional charge to the customers. Barnes and Noble will
then track the number of out of town purchases that are credited to our book

fair. If this is successful, we believe that the company will continue to
expand the opportunities for school book fairs. We hope that, if you are
shopping at a Barnes and Noble store anywhere in the chain from
this Friday-Sunday you will support us by printing the book fair voucher and

presenting it at checkout before you make the purchase. Thank you
for assisting us in this unique opportunity. We hope to be able to report a
successful experiment.

Thanks for the responses to my request for copyright free places to get
clipart for use on my school website.

ORIGINAL POST:
I am the website administrator for my school. I find that I spend too much
time
searching for graphics to include on my site. I would like to find one
website
or application that has a good selection of school graphics that can be used

without infringing on copyright. I am even willing to pay for a subscription
if
it makes my life easier.

Has anyone found a good copyright-free graphic website? Any good
subcscription
sites out there? If so, what is the cost? How about CDROMs? Any details
would
be appreciated! Thanks!

For educational clip art try http://etc.usf.edu/clipart/ which is free and
is from the state of Florida. A maximum of fifty (50) clipart items may be
used in any non-commercial, educational project (report, presentation,
display, website, etc.) without special permission. The use of more than
fifty clipart items in a single project requires written permission from the
Florida Center for Instructional Technology (FCIT) at USF.

Other good sites are: http://www.awesomeclipartforeducators.com/,
http://www.teacherfiles.com/clip_art.htm, and http://www.pics4learning.com/

Have you tried pics4learning?

http://www.pics4learning.com/

* * * * *
I don’t know how much we pay for the subscription as this is purchased for
us by a state consortium, but we have access to and really like ClipArt.com.

(one year to this site costs $159.95, and there are shorter term memberships
as well. )

ALA has two Graphics CDs with library clip art that is royalty-free.

* * * * *
This is a Creative Commons one which my Grade 6's use for their blogs:

http://flickrcc.bluemountains.net/

* * * * *
I often use this site when I need free clip art:

http://www.free-clipart-pictures.net/school_clipart.html

The images aren’t very sophisticated, but they do the job. . .

"Manners are of more importance

than laws. Manners are what vex or soothe,

corrupt or purify, exalt or debase, barbarize or refine us

by a constant, steady, uniform, insensible operation, like that of the air

we breathe in."

Edmund Burke (1729-1797)
