Hello all, it is interesting that I am concentrating on the subject of Internet filtering today and concurrently reading postings by Nancy Willard, whose voice is such a strong advocate for increased Internet access at school. I am trying to list the "talking points" most often used by those who favor very restrictive filters, and then I want to refute them one by one. I have several points already, of course, but wonder if you know of other ones that you have been given when asking for increased access. Here are the ones I have so far: - It is the law...CIPA requires stringent filtering. - Parents demand the filters to remain very tight. - Bandwidth is a huge issue - Social networking is just plain dangerous. - Filtering keeps kids safe. - If the filters were loosened, there would be a big increase in bad behavior online, both from students and also on the part of teachers. Am I leaving something out? Have you been given other reasons? Thanks for any additional thoughts, mabell -- ********************************* "Try Curiosity!"--Dorothy Parker ********************************* Dr. Mary Ann Bell Associate Professor Sam Houston State University A Member of the Texas State University System Department of Library Science lis_mah@shsu.edu drmaryannbell@gmail.com -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
