Wow! First off let me thank you for all the responses! Over 50. Many felt it was definitely Realistic Fiction with touches of exaggerations just like in real life. A few pointed out that the reviews (Horn Book, SLJ, etc.) say tall tale. There were some excellent suggestions of how to handle the situation and offered alternative book choices. Many were very saddened that a teacher would actually refuse to let a reluctant reader boy, read a book recommended by the librarian as realistic fiction and actually bring this 6th gr. boy to tears in front of his peers. All I can say is what a group LM_NET is! Thanks again, Lori Belair, Librarian Cayuga and A.J.
