This idea is not mine (thank you, Carol Bernardi!) but our HS uses a "Cart of Knowledge" to isolate books on reserve from the rest of the collection. Since I'm the one who pulls the books, I don't allow them to circulate as long as the rest of the class may need the books. We are a small (650) HS so it's easy for me to track this. The Cart of Knowledge really helps with keeping the books accessible, too, because the kids aren't grabbing them and throwing them back on the shelves (and out of order.) I made a "Cart of Knowledge" sign for the cart, so they can easily identify it as the one with their class resources on it. I have also checked the books out to a teacher and carted them to their classroom, should the library be too busy for their classes to come in.
