In cheerful, jaunty stanzas that beg to be read aloud, a Boston 
family boards the Downeaster train that will carry them north to a 
blissful vacation in Maine.  A cleverly repeated couplet reminds us 
of the colorful ship language that defined Maine as "downeast" "O' 
the train to Maine is Portland bound./From Boston that's up, but to 
Maine we go down."  Throughout the rail journey, the family members 
dream of their favorite Maine activities from a lobster feast and sea 
breezes by the lighthouse to lazy days at the lake and deep sea 
fishing.  Bright illustrations capture the beauty of Maine in summer 
and as well as the fun of riding the rails. Suggested ages 4-8.
