The Dump Man's Treasures by Lynn Plourde, illustrated by Mary Beth
Owens. DownEast, 2008. 978-0-89272-725-4

The Dump Man's Treasures is a book for our times, a book to love if
you are an environmentalist concerned about waste, a librarian who
loves books more than anything else, or a teacher who values the
ability to read as a person's most essential skill. Mr. Pottle, the
dump man in a small town in Maine, separates trash from treasure when
people drop off their dump loads, and he especially has his eye out
for books-all books! He cleans them, repairs them, and lends them
out from his makeshift lending library at the dump. When they
threaten to overrun the place, he even loads them into an old grocery
cart and delivers them all over town to those who can't get to the
dump. Only when his cart fails him, loses a wheel, and lands his
books and him in a ditch with a broken ankle that requires surgery do
the people in his town learn his surprising secret. Mr. Pottle,
great lover of books, can't read!  The children know just what to do;
they read aloud to him, and, as the final illustration hints, teach
him to read. Illustrated in Owens' characteristic cozy and appealing
water color illustrations, this book is a celebration of recycling,
books, reading, and community, and one you will not want to
miss. Suggested ages 4-10.
