Independent Dames by Laurie Halse Anderson, illustrated by Matt Faulkner. Simon & Schuster, 2008. 978-0-689-85808-6 Wow! If you have, by some lapse of attention, missed this amazing book, order it today. The team that gave us Thank You, Sarah: The Woman Who Saved Thanksgiving in 2002 has returned with an even meatier story of American history. Each double-page spread in this extensive illustrated nonfiction book is rich with information and fun, as it tells the story of the women of the Revolution-the women on the home front, the spies, the soldiers, the activists, all true American heroines often forgotten. Faulkner's delightful ink-and-watercolor graphic style illustrations, decorated with humorous speech bubbles, will pull in even reluctant readers. Boxed text in each spread carries the general narrative forward while brief biographies and historical narratives appear in decorative ovals. And if that isn't enough information, there is a detailed timeline running continuously across the bottom of the pages, highlighting major events and providing further elucidation of the text above. Add to that an appendix that nearly doubles the information plus a detailed bibliography and your collection cannot be without this fabulous book! Suggest Grades: 3-8.
