Yes, this is old news to reading coaches in Alabama who became aware of this when
we tried to get schools to do the retell component. Many of our schools still do
not, but those that do have made their teachers and students aware of reading for
understanding and not for speed.

Subject: TAR: Spanish-language picture books

Hi everyone,

I work with a group of preschool and kindergarten age students (3-6)
whose families have recently immigrated to the U.S. from Mexico and
Central America. I am trying to put together a list of good
Spanish-language picture books to share with them. The majority of
books I have found are bilingual, which is great, but some of the kids
are put off by the fact that there are double the words per page in
these books. Suggestions of good Spanish-language books, maybe even
featuring Latino characters and culture, would be much appreciated!

Thank you for your help!

I'm sorry that you did not have a good response from Scholastic. Do you
suppose it depends on who your rep is? I had Scholastic Book Fairs for =
over
fifteen years, and my phone rep (who has remained the same all that time =
and
whom I have never met) always was willing to customize my fair for me. =
I=92d
request more copies up front of certain titles, ask for some of the =

not to be sent, and other things. =20

=20

Granted, I was a 7-8 library, but I felt that many of the titles would =
have
appealed to high school students, and I probably could have had more of =
them
if I=92d asked. For instance, last February, all of the Twilight books =
up to
that time (three) were included. Call your rep and tell him/her you are
dissatisfied with the answer you=92ve received in the past and that =
you=92d like
to have a Scholastic Book Fair but that you feel they aren=92t trying to
cooperate with you. Scholastic wants to make money. I think that if =
you
talk to the right people, you=92ll get some action. If you=92d like, =
write to
me directly and I=92ll give you the name and number of the rep I used. =
It=92s a
different territory, probably, but she=92s been with Scholastic for =
years, so
she might have a suggestion of someone you could call to get the answers =
you
want.

Well, to be honest, I haven't had any responses that have helped me =

Most people say that Barnes & Noble is great to use, but we do not have =
