I have received the Teaching Tolerance magazine for years. It is free to all teachers. It has wonderful material on how to teach children about racial equality, religious tolerance and acceptance of various family configurations. It is produced by the Southern Poverty Law Center which has an outstanding history of helping to stop hate violence by the KKK and other hate mongering groups. I am not familiar with its Intelligence Report, but I cannot imagine that it does anything but track and expose hate groups. Maybe the teachers mentioned only gave it a cursory look and misinterpreted the content. I would urge them to take a harder look and to go to the organization's website to see what is really being said: http://www.splcenter.org/index.jsp Judith Schaffner Coordinator NYC DOE Office of Library Services jschaff3@schools.nyc.gov Susan Speranza wrote: > Is anyone familiar with "Teaching Tolerance" and the "Intelligence > Report" put out by the Southern Poverty Law Center? > > Remarkably, two of my teachers thought that one issue of the IR was > promoting hate groups; one of the teachers called the IR propaganda > and want it banned from the library. > > Any comments or insights into this group and their magazine would be > most appreciated. > > Thanks, > > Susan Speranza > Library Media Specialist > Bellows Falls Union High School > Bellows Falls, VT 05143 > castleriggpekes@gmail.com > > -------------------------------------------------------------------- > Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law. > You can prevent most e-mail filters from deleting LM_NET postings > by adding LM_NET@LISTSERV.SYR.EDU to your e-mail address book. > To change your LM_NET status, e-mail to: listserv@listserv.syr.edu > In the message write EITHER: 1) SIGNOFF LM_NET 2) SET LM_NET NOMAIL > 3) SET LM_NET MAIL 4) SET LM_NET DIGEST * Allow for confirmation. > * LM_NET Help & Information: http://www.eduref.org/lm_net/ > * LM_NET Archive: http://www.eduref.org/lm_net/archive/ > * EL-Announce with LM_NET Select: http://lm-net.info/ > * LM_NET Supporters: http://www.eduref.org/lm_net/ven.html > * LM_NET Wiki: http://lmnet.wikispaces.com/ > -------------------------------------------------------------------- > > -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
