You know, I just love LM_Net! Nearly 20 people took the time to help me out, and you've made a 2nd grade teacher very happy. My original request: 'I have a teacher looking for the source of a poem with the repeated refrain, "The Goblins will get you if you don't watch out!" Can anyone identify the poem and the poet?' The response: the poet is James Whitcomb Riley. The poem, first published in 1875, is most often titled "Little Orphant Annie," and the text is here: http://www.poetry-archive.com/r/little_orphant_annie.html It can also be found in various collections (and online) as "Little Orphan Annie," "Little Orphant Allie" and "The Gobble-Uns." Riley's poem's narrator was actually named "Allie," but a typesetter's mistake led to the poem being published as "Little Orphant Annie," which later inspired the name of the Annie of comic-strip fame (and explains why the poem is often called "Little Orphan Annie.") The poem is often shown in dialect, with the refrain written as, "the Gobble-uns 'll git you Ef you Don't Watch Out!" Another LM_Netter pointed out that Riley's birthday is tomorrow. Riley is also famous for the poem "When the Frost is on the Pumpkin" (or "Punkin.")
