It is genre time. I tell several different versions of a story in which I am coming to school and a deer runs across the road in front of my car. Car hits the ditch. In one, the deer runs to my aid and in an English accent asks if he can help or call someone for me - *fantasy*. In another, I call AAA myself and am pulled from the ditch and make my way to school, late but unharmed - *realistic fiction. *I tried a new one today. I was driving my horse-drawn carriage to school over the dirt roads. The deer bounded across in front of the horse, causing him to rear and tip over the carriage. I stumbled out, tearing my petticoat and tripped over my hoop skirt - *historical fiction.* Instead of guessing historical fiction, a boy raised his hand and blurted out, "I know this! It's Cinderella fiction!" Gotta love 'em. -- Linda Martin Teacher Librarian and Storyteller 2007 Georgia Library Media Specialist of the Year Gainesville, GA lindamartin423@gmail.com www.lindamartin.us -------------------------------------------------------------------- Please note: All LM_NET postings are protected by copyright law.
