I am lucky enough to have the technology available so that I can begin checkout on
the first day of school.  Surprisingly, very few teachers want to come on the first
day because THEY aren't ready.  By the end of the first 10 days of school I have
seen every student in the building as a library class visit and all students 1-6th
grades have checked out their first books of the year.  Generally, my first 2-3
lessons involve library orientation, book care and responsibility as a library
user.  My district supports flex scheduling, and we are allowed to meet the needs
of our staff.  Not all schools in my district begin checkout so early, again, we
are allowed to meet staff needs as we determine them.

Subject: ELEM: When does book checkout begin?

Hello,

This is my second year in a brand new library, but I didn't start
until mid-Sept. last year, so this will be my first year starting at
the beginning.

I'd like to know how soon your students start checking out books.
I've read a couple posts about waiting with the kindergartners, but
I'm curious what you do with other grades. Do you delay book checkout
for the first week or two and focus more on library lessons/reading
stories/reviewing rules?

Thanks,
Kate Tamms
