Subject: Terrific Author Visit with Toni Buzzeo

Last week, our school district hosted a week-long visit with author Toni
Buzzeo for grades K-5. It is so easy to prepare for a visit with Toni
because she provides a great deal of information and curriculum support on
her website, http://www.tonibuzzeo.com. In addition, her professional book
Toni Buzzeo and You, has biographical information and more activities than
you can possibly use. Not only did my students love her books, but the
stories were very easy to use as a springboard for research. Even my
kindergartners did research on animal dads after listening to Little Loon
and Papa.

I had a feeling that we were in for a treat. Several of my friends from
nearby school districts have hosted Toni in recent years and were extremely
enthusiastic about her. I had seen Toni present at a conference and she
was excellent, but that doesn't always translate into a great program for
children. Toni arrived at our school with beautifully hand made puppets,
dolls, and costumes. She has designed a PowerPoint for every presentation
At my school, she performed four different presentations geared to
different
interests and grade levels in one day. Her energy never lagged, nor did
the children's rapt attention. The students were thrilled that they were
encouraged to ask questions at the beginning of the presentation. That was
a great ice breaker and shows just how well Toni Buzzeo understands
children.

Of course, the comments after an author visit tell the true story. My
principal noted that, "It was a wonderful day." I loved the comment of the
4th grade teacher who said that her students told her that Toni Buzzeo's
advice "would make me a better writer." Her presentation for kindergarten
was a riot. They didn't want to stop to go to lunch. But the most unusual
comment came from one of the tech guys, who said, "She was great. Really
well prepared with her laptop and remote and everything. I didn't have to
do a thing." Of course, Toni is a school library media specialist and it
shows. Her professionalism and love of children shines through every
minute
of the day. The kids simply said, "We love Toni Buzzeo!"

We are very lucky to have the support of our district in hosting an annual
author visit. The down side is that preparing new author visit curriculum
and programs every year is exhausting. Often the design is used only once,
superseded by the next new author. However, I know that the curriculum
that we used in conjunction with our Toni Buzzeo visit will be repeated for
years to come. I highly recommend Toni for any elementary school.
