The link Nick Glass embedded contains most of the original selections (including
the poetry) as well as 3 additional selections. And it's in CD. Nice work.

Subject: Baseball poem for opening day

Highest praise for this audio recording that Doug Bancks mentioned. I have played
through my audio cassette version of this evening's performances -- so spectacular.
But I must say that I'm very biased: Roger Angell and Bart Giamatti are two people
who have had a huge influence on my life. Amazing minds and passion for life and
baseball!

I found the recording on the symphony space website:
https://www.symphonyspace.org/estore/item/21 (but I wonder if this is an excerpt).

One other baseball title that I think is about the best book on simply loving
baseball (for upper middle and high school) is Phil Hoose's Perfect Once Removed.
Hilarious. So on target -- this memoir about a boy who lives for the game, has no
playing talent, but has the game help him find a place in his new school and
community.

Happy opening day week for everyone that is as excited about this as I. Cheers,

Nick

Hi,
There was a recent post about baseball poetry, in this case for opening day=
. I would like to toss out (overhand :)) another possible resource.

In the early 1990's Listening Library published a series of audio tape prog=
rams titled "Selected Shorts." These were short stories and poems recorded =
live at Symphony space. Volume IV in the series (1991) was entirely devoted=
to baseball. It was called Selected Shorts celebrates baseball. It contain=
ed 2 cassette tapes. Side 3 had poetry, but truth be told the writing throu=
ghout was so evocative it all had poetic qualities. The contents are listed=
below. It's a beautiful piece of work.

Unfortunately I could not find this product available from Listening Librar=
y, or any place at this time.

Side 1
PLAY BY PLAY (intro) by Roger Angell and A. Bartlett Giamatti.
THE GLORY OF THEIR TIMES (excerpt) by Lawrence S. Ritter
HUB FANS BID KID ADIEU (beginning) from Assorted Prose by John Updike.

Side 2
HUB FANS BID KID ADIEU (concluding)

Side 3
COBB WOULD HAVE CAUGHT IT from In the Rose of Time by Robert Fitzgerald.
PITCHER and BASE STEALER from The Orb Weaver by Robert Francis.
POLO GROUNDS by Rolfe Humphries
ATTITUDE from Happy to be here by Garrison Keillor

Side 4
GAME SIX from Five Seasons by Roger Angell
THE GREEN FIELDS OF THE MIND by A. Bartlett Giamatti
