I just found out that I might be pulled next year to help our 5th and 6th grade
teachers with Guided Reading due to low state reading scores. Guided Reading is a
program in which small groups of students sit around in a circle and read
not-very-interesting "textbooks" of sorts out loud. Blech. This news comes on top
of me losing my library aide in January, who was not replaced due to budget cuts.
So in essence, if this plan does go through, I will be closing the library every
day next year to work with Guided Reading. I've spoken with my principal about
this, but don't think that it made a difference.
I'm very upset. Closing the library to assist with a reading program due to low
reading scores seems contradictory to me. It also makes me feel devalued - like
it's not a big deal to close the library every day. It's my second year in this
particular district, and between this recent news and a few other events, it's been
a really rough couple of years.
Am I overreacting? I would love some honest opinions...please tell me to stop
throwing myself a pity party if you feel that's the case!
