Earlier this week I posted that I had a good experience with the Chez
Dewey activity that was posted here some time ago. The original message was
posted by Jennie Scott-McKenzie (jmckenzie@isb.rs) and can be found in the
archives. I called mine Café Dewey. Several people asked me about the
activity. I had meant to respond earlier, but my hard drive crashed two
days ago and I’m still trying to catch up.
I had chefs, waiters, and customers. I made menus of different Dewey
subjects. The customers ordered while the waiters and chefs found the
books. While they waited, the customers had placemat activities to work on.
At the end of the “meal” the customers became bus boys and reshelved the
books.
I did think of a follow-up activity that I will try soon. I’m going to
write the Dewey 100s on paper plates. For example, they may have a plate
that says 500-599. They have to find out the name of that section. Then
I’ll have groups look through magazines to find pictures to go along with
that section and glue them to the plate. I’ll make a bulletin board of our
Café Dewey.
