This is my first year in this library, and in preparation for some new shelves and lots of re-arranging, I am weeding like mad. So far, my two favorite weeds are: _Think Metric_ by Franklyn M. Branley, copyright 1972 From the cover flap: "Good-bye forever to miles, quarts, bushels, pounds, and tons! Soon we too will measure things the way the rest of the world does--the easy way--in meters, liters, and grams." Um, yeah. 37 years later and the U.S. still isn't quiiiiite there yet! And the other one, _Self Defense for Girls_, by Bruce Tegner and Alice McGrath, copyright 1969 I was reading this one aloud to some of my female 8th and 9th grade library assistants and we were all alternately appalled and hysterically amused. A favorite quote: "In this situation, the man is not trying to harm you, but is making unwelcome advances; take his wrist in a friendly fashion and then pull back on his little finger." The accompanying photo shows the woman smiling charmingly at the man seated closely next to her and then in the next photo he's grimacing in pain as she sadistically yanks back on the specified finger. Then there's the page showing five different ways to stomp on a man's instep, culminating with, "If the person is someone you do not wish to hurt, place your foot on his instep and stand on it without stamping. You can do this in a good-humored way and get the desired result." The photo shows the young woman, standing next to her male companion with her arm around his waist, smiling up at him flirtatiously as she mashes down on his foot with hers. Mixed messages, anyone? My only comfort with this last volume is that it hasn't been checked out in ages. Yipes.
