Here is what I did with the calendars. I have a large bulletin board and a display
case as well as a smaller bulletin board that I use all year long., I take the
calendars, pick out some of the dates and do a big display on the big BB using
items that go with some of the days: Bubble wrap stapled to colorful constructin
paper for Bubble Wrap Day, for example. I might pick out a specific week and do a
display on the big BB or in the display with that as the theme:National Dental Week
for example, with info and cartoons about dental health and books from the
collection along with any stuffed toys or other artifacts that pertain to dental
health. Once I found a toy Dentist kit at a Thrift Store so I will add that to the
display.

I also pick out some interesting items to use to pull books from the collection. I
make a small sign to identify the theme...although, since I had high school, I
soemtimes made it a acontest - Guess the Theme. I would print out the entire list
and mount it onthe small BB on colorful paper. It was interesting how many would
learn to look there to see if there were any clues to the theme.Sometimes,
especially at Christmas when most of my displays were on that theme, I would simply
mount the list - I would usually get a comment: " Did you know this was xxx week?"
They loved to see if they could stump me.

My original question: What do you do in your library with these monthly lists? Just
wondering about some ideas for activities.....

Responses: I post them on the bulletin board in the hall outside of the library.
When there is something that applies to a particular person or group I mention it
to them. The kids seem to enjoy looking at it.

I don't really use them as an activity, but...I have a computer lab (34 stations)
in my media center. It has six or seven large windows that face out into one of the
main hallways in our school. I used Publisher to create "calendar pages" (like the
boxed desk calendars you see around Christmas time). I print two days out on an 8
1/2 X 11 paper and cut them in half. Then I hang them up in the computer lab
windows. I've gotten a lot of comments/feedback about some of the wackier days!
Kids, staff, and even parents have commented. It's not too time consuming, and it
puts something interesting in the hallway.

I have a monthly events calendar that I update with these events. Then I select a
few, and create book displays around each topic on my library tables. For July, I
had a Moon Day table, a Bastille Day table, etc. I also use the upcoming events to
help guide my story time selections.

Thank you for the ideas!
